Continuity in paragraphs

A smooth flow of sentences within the paragraphs can be achieved by certain lexical and grammatical means. Lexical means of connection include:

1. repeating some key words in successive sentences;

1. using synonyms in successive sentences;

2. using a pronoun to refer to a word in the previous sentence;

3. using the words with the same root;

4. using words or word-combinations belonging to the same thematic series;

5. using pro-words “one”, “that” (“those”), “do”, and mutually correlated pro-words “former…latter”.

Grammatical means of connection. The sentences within the paragraph can also be linked together with the help of transitional words and phrases (conjunctions, conjunction-like words and conjunctional phrases):

Addition	And, and then, and now, and yet, again, also, then, moreover, likewise, similarly, further, furthermore, besides, in addition, in addition to, in a similar way, more than that;
Contrast	But, but then, but even, however, nevertheless, conversely, reversely, yet, on the one hand, on the other hand, on the contrary, still, in spite of (that), in contrast with, contrary to;

Cause	For that reason, this is the reason why, this is why;
Clarification	Evidently, in fact, in other words, of course;
Summary	In conclusion, in summary, in short, to sum up, to summarize, in brief, in sum, on the whole, to conclude;
Enumeration	First, second, firstly, secondly, in the first place, to begin with, in the second place, lastly, the latter, the former;
Generalization	In general, on the whole, as a rule, as usual, usually, normally, generally;
Illustration	For example, thus for example, for instance, to illustrate this, as an illustration;
Explanation	As for, as to, as regards, in respect of (to), with regard to, with respect to, concerning, in relation to;
Repetition	In other words, stated another way, to be more precise, otherwise stated, t put it another way, that is;
Comparison	In comparison with, as compared with;
Result	As a result;
Degrees of probability	Perhaps, maybe, possibly, probably, anyway, anyhow, indeed, certainly, surely, doubtless
