  1. Now look through the following list of ideas about the two styles and mark those dealing with the scientific prose style (S) and those dealing with the belles-lettres style (B). Make use of the points to make the above given table complete.

  1. A characteristic feature of the style is sentence patterns. They are of three types: postulatory, argumentative and formulative.

  1. An observable feature of this style and one that strikes the eyes of the reader, is the use of quotations and references.

  1. Another and no less important feature, and, perhaps, the most conspicuous, is the use of the terms specific to each given branch of science.

  1. It introduces the typical features of colloquial language to a full degree or a lesser one or a slight degree, if any.

  1. Its trait is the peculiar individual selection of vocabulary and syntax, a kind of lexical and syntactical idiosyncrasy.

  1. Its vocabulary reflects to a greater or lesser degree the author’s personal evaluation of things or phenomena.

  1. Its feature is the frequent use of foot-notes, not of the reference kind, but digressive in character.

  1. One may observe in it genuine, not trite, imagery, achieved by purely linguistic devices.

  1. The first and most noticeable feature of this style is the logical sequence of utterances with clear indication of their interrelations and interdependence.

  1. The function the style performs can be called “aesthetico-cognitive”. This is a double function which aims at the cognitive process, which secures the gradual unfolding of the idea to the reader and at the same time calls forth a feeling of pleasure, a pleasure which is derived from the form in which the content is wrought. This pleasure is caused not only by admiration of the selected language means and their peculiar arrangement but also by the effect that the reader is led to form his own conclusions as to the purpose of the author.

  1. The purpose of the style is not to prove but only to suggest a possible interpretation of the phenomena of life by forcing the reader to see the viewpoint of the writer.

  1. The impersonality of writings can also be considered a typical feature of this style. Its peculiarity is the frequent use of passive constructions.

  1. The language means used tend to be objective, precise, unemotional, devoid of any individuality, there is a striving for the most generalized form of expression.

  1. The purpose of science as a branch of human activity is to disclose by research the inner substance of things and phenomena of objective reality and find out the laws regulating them, thus enabling man to predict, control and direct their further development in order to improve the material and social life of mankind.

  1. The words are used in contextual and very often in more than one dictionary meaning, or at least are greatly influenced by the lexical environment.

  1. This style is individual in essence.

  1. This style is mainly characterized by an arrangement of language means which will bring proofs to confirm a theory. Therefore the main function of the style is proof.
