The Doctor’s Office

PATIENT: Hi, this is Carlo Pirelli calling. I need to see the doctor immediately.

RECEPTIONIST: Is this an emergency?

PATIENT: Yes, I have a terrible stomachache and a fever.

PATIENT: No, I'm a regular patient.

PATIENT: Hi, my name is Carlo Pirelli.

RECEPTIONIST: Yes. Take a seat right here for a moment.

NURSE: Hello. Let me take your

temperature and blood pressure.

PATIENT: Sure.

NURSE: Well, your temperature is a little high, but your blood pressure is perfect for your age.

PATIENT: That's good to hear.

NURSE: The doctor will be right in.

DOCTOR: Mr. Pirelli, I hear you're in pain.

PATIENT: Yes. I have a stomachache and I feel a little dizzy.

DOCTOR: Does it hurt if I press here?

PATIENT: Yes.

DOCTOR: Take a deep breath. It doesn't seem to be anything serious. You probably just have the flu. There’s a virus going around. Don’t worry about it.

PATIENT: So, there's nothing I can do?

DOCTOR: Go home, rest and drink lots of fluids. If you don't feel better in a couple of days, come back to see me.

In a chemist's shop, a chemist (Ch) is talking to a customer (C).

A

Ch: Can I help you?

С: Yes, I cut my finger yesterday, and it really hurts.

Ch: You need some antiseptic cream for it.

С: Right. Could I have some plasters and some cotton wool, please?

Ch: Yes, of course. That's €5.60, please.

B

Ch: Yes?

С: Er, I need something for a cold.

Ch: Right, well, try these tablets − they're very good.

С: OK, and how often do I take them?

Ch: Take two tablets every four hours with water.

С: Thanks. And I'd like a box of tissues, please, and some cough medicine.

D – Doctor, M − Manuel

D: Hello. Come in and sit down. What seems to be the matter?

M: Well, I haven't felt very well for a few days. I’ve got a bit of a temperature, and I just feel terrible. I've got stomach ache as well.

D: Have you felt sick?

M: I've been sick a few times.

D: Mm. Let me have a look at you. Your glands aren't swollen. Have you got a sore throat?

M: No, I haven't.

D: Have you had diarrhoea at all?

M: Yes, I have, actually.

D: Have you had anything to eat recently which might have disagreed with you?

M: No, I don't think ... Oh! I went to a barbecue a few days ago and the chicken wasn't properly cooked.

D: It could be that, or just something that was left out of the fridge for too long.

M: Yes I started being ill that night.

D: Well, you should have a day or two in bed, and I'll give you something that will look after the stomachache and diarrhoea. Drink plenty of liquids, and just take things easy for a while. I'll write you a prescription.

M: Thank you. Do I have to pay you?

D: No, no. Seeing me is free, but you'll have to pay for the prescription. It's £16.

M: Right. Thanks very much. Goodbye.

D: Bye-bye.
