2.3.4. Tele-conferencing and Video-conferencing

These systems allow numerous people to be simultaneously connected so that discussion can take place even though they do not meet. This can take place either within the organisation or externally and even on an international basis.

Sound only conferencing is inexpensive but has limitations e.g. identification of speakers. Video-conferencing overcomes these problems but is far more expensive and with present levels of technology requires specialist studio equipment.

Data Transmission

In the UK most data transmitted between different locations is transmitted over ordinary telegraph and telephone circuits which are capable of carrying data as well as speech. Data can be transmitted over the ordinary public telephone circuits or a private line can be hired.

Transmission is possible in three modes:

1.9 SIMPLEX - transmission is possible in one direction only.

2.9 HALF DUPLEX - transmission is possible in both directions but not simultaneously.

3.9 DUPLEX - transmission is possible in both directions simultaneously.

Where the telephone circuits are used a MODEM (MODulator/DEModulator) is required to convert digital signals (used by computers) into analogue signals (used for transmission) at each end of the line.

Facsimile Transmission or Fax

Fax allows the transmission of an exact copy of an original document including diagrams, pictures and text. It can be thought of as long distance photo-copying. Fax is a reliable, speedy method of sending duplicates and is widely used in business, government and the professions.

There have been a number of problems with Fax systems including their speed and use of special paper. Newer systems are much faster and produce high definition copies on plain paper. The computer communicates directly with the receiving fax machine.

As with most IT products fax machines are being constantly developed and improved. The latest development, pioneered by Hewlett-Packard and called Omnishare, is for an interactive fax machine that transmits voice and data simultaneously. The machine allows people in two locations to examine a document, make corrections that are instantly transmitted as they talk and to negotiate changes over the voice link. The machine can be plugged into any telephone line and is now widely available.
