The Emerald Isle

Ireland is mainly an English-speaking country. It is the most westerly land in Europe. Ireland lies on the same parallel as Novosibirsk, but it is not cold in winter and it rains very often. This is because it is the first land to meet the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

Ireland is often called the Emerald Isle because of its beautiful green hills and fields. There is an old Irish saying that Ireland must be the cleanest place in the world because rain washes it every day.

There are few big cities in Ireland. The only really large cities, where the population is concentrated, are Dublin and Belfast.

Dublin is a very interesting city. With its galleries, museums and theatres, it is a centre of literature, learning and art.

The history of Ireland has not been peaceful. The Irish people had continually to fight for their land against English invaders.

In 1949 Ireland became an independent republic. But its northern part called Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The people of the Emerald Isle hope to see their country united.

NOTES:

- emerald - изумруд

– because of – из-за

- field - поле

– peaceful - мирный
