About Belarus

  3. And finally, I’d like to mention some little known facts about Belarus.

The territory of Belarus is 207,600 sq. km. We border with Poland, Lithuania, Russia, The Ukraine and Latvia. The population is about 10 mln. people. The capital of Belarus is Minsk, about 2 mln. people. The climate is moderate continental, with mild and humid winter and warm summer.

Belarus us a country of intelligent beauty. For this you have to stop and feel: warm days and flying webs during Indian summer, the taste of baked potatoes on campfire, crisp snow in winter, beautiful storks in spring.

The Republic of Belarus is an export-oriented state with a well-developed production sector. Belarus is one of the global leading exporters of tractors, road construction and municipal equipment. The major branches of the Belarus economy include the processing industry, agriculture, construction, trade, transport and communication.

Top 8 Belarusian products are: freight vehicles, road and construction equipment-tractors and agricultural equipment-refrigerators and household equipment-fertilizers-flax fibers-chemical fibers and threads-meat products-dairy products. Belarus is a strong producer of sugar and confectionery, canned fish, fruit and vegetables.

The biggest enterprises of the industry are … Agricultural production accounts for about 7% of the country’s GDP.

The Republic of Belarus is one of the major potato producers in the world.

1. Belovezhskaya Pushcha is the largest ancient forest in Europe. There are nearly 2000 giant trees in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha, some of them pre-dating Columbus discovery of America.

2. Belarus has the world’s largest population of bison, the majority of which live in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha. These are the heaviest mammals on the European continent, the last European representatives of bison.

3. One of three East-Slavonic St. Sophia Cathedrals is situated in Belarus. The cathedral to St. Sophia was built as a symbol of equality with the most powerful Old Russian towns – Kiev and Novgorod.
