TEETH WHITENING
Whitening teeth for aesthetic purposes has been dated back to the Ancient Egyptians, where a mixture of ground pumice and wine vinegar was brushed on the teeth with an rudimentary toothbrush. Nowadays it is a widespread procedure which can performed either at home or at the dentist’s office.
Tooth whitening, also known as dental bleaching, is a common procedure in general dentistry but most especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Сhild's deciduous teeth are generally whiter than the adult ones. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous. As a result of our life style and food habits , the surface of teeth becomes more transparent and more of the yellow-colored dentin shows through.
Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, food and tobacco. Certain antibiotic medications can also lead to teeth stains or a reduction in the brilliance of the enamel.
There are several methods to whiten teeth: whitening toothpaste, bleaching gel and laser bleaching.
Some whitening toothpastes contain gentle polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains only and do not contain bleach. None of the home use whitening toothpastes can produce the bleaching effect you can get in the dentist's office. Whitening toothpastes can lighten your tooth's color by about one shade, but professional bleaching can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter.
Traditionally, at-home whitening is done with bleaching gel which is applied to the teeth using thin guard trays. Oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are utilized to lighten the shade of the tooth.
Laser bleaching utilizes light energy to accelerate the process of bleaching in a dental office. The effects of bleaching can last for several months, but may vary depending on the lifestyle of the patient. Factors which will decrease whitening include smoking and the ingestion of dark colored liquids like coffee, tea and red wine.
And remember - a bright gleaming white smile is one of today’s iconic images of beauty.
