Functional style is a system of interrelated language means which serves a definite aim in communication
Each functional style has its own peculiar features concerning vocabulary, syntax and phonetics.
1. The belle-lettres style (the language of poetry, emoive prose, the language of the drama)
2. the publicist style (oratory and speeches, the essay, article)
3. the newspaper style (brief news items, headlines, advertisements and announcements, the editoral)
4. The style of scientific prose (humanitarian sciences, ‘exact’ sciences, popular scientific prose)
5. the style of official documents (diplomatic documents; business documents; legal documents; military documents)
The style of official documents. The main aim of this type of communication is to state the conditions binding two parties and to reach agreement between the contracting parties. It is represented by the substyles of:
1. the language of business documents
2. the language of legal documents
3. the language of diplomacy
4. the language of military documents
The parties may be the state and the citizen, or a citizen and a citizen, a society and its members, different institutions, governments, entity.
The most general function of the style determines its peculiarities. The most striking feature is especial system of clichés terms and set expressions.
There is a use of abbreviations, conventional symbols (ltd.). Abbreviations are especially abandoned in military documents. Conventional symbols here are used as signs of military code. One more feature of the style is the use of words in their logical dictionary meaning.
