Shopping in a big shop
Susan has done a lot of extra work in her office lately, and Mr. Robinson, the manager, has given her two days’ holiday, so she and her mother have come to London for a day’s shopping. Spring has come at last, and Susan wants some new clothes. Mrs. Brown is glad because she likes to have someone to go shopping with.
They caught an early train to London and were in Oxford Street just after tea, with all the day in front of them.
They did the important shopping first: Susan bought a light spring coat and two pairs of shoes. Mrs. Brown bought some shirts and a pullover for her son David. Now they are having lunch in the restaurant of one of the big stores.
Big stores started in America more than 50 years ago, and then the idea was brought to European countries. These stores are wonderful places. It is easy to understand why people enjoy shopping there. They can do all their shopping under one roof. All the things for sale are on counters, so that they can be еasily seen, and the customers walk round and choose what they want.
The store is divided into departments: women's clothes, men's clothes, shoes, toys, sports goods, umbrellas, leather goods, china and glass, food and so on. There are lifts to take people to different floors. There is a big restaurant with an orchestra and sometimes a tea-room as well. There is a room where you can write letters and a post-office to post them. You will also find a room where you can rest if you are tired. There are men's and women'a hairdressers, and an office where you can book seats for the theatre or arrange to travel anywhere in the world.
Now Mrs. Brown and her daughter have finished their lunch and are ready to start shopping again. There are lots of little thing that Mrs. Brown wants for the house. Susan is going to buy a birthday present for a girl in her office. They may see one or two suitable things as they walk round, and, unless those are too expensive, they will buy them. There's a food department in the store where Mrs. Brown is going to buy something ready-cooked end make a quick meal for the family, when she gets home.
They have spent more money than they wanted to, but they are pleased with their shopping. A tiring day, but enjoyable if you like shopping.
Jane
is looking for a new coat. She sees one that she likes on a rack.
Jane: Excuse me. I'd like to try on this coat. Assistant:
Certainly. I think it will fit you - it's about your size. Jane:
I'll try it on, then. Oh dear, it's too small. The sleeves are too
short and it's a bit tight. The
colour doesn't go with (look nice with)
my
shoes, either. I
think I'll leave it, thank you. Jane goes to look at some dresses in
the sale (a period when goods are sold at a lower price). Jane:
I'll take this dress, but I
haven't got any cash on me. Do
you take credit cards? Assistant:
No, but we do accept cheques if you have a banker's
card
(cheque card). Jane:
Good, then I'll pay by cheque.
