Exercise 7. Read the sentences and add a sentences with the Present Perfect Continuous.

Example: Tom is out of breath. (he / run) He has been running.

1. We are tired. (we / work / hard)

2. You look unhappy. (you / cry)

3. John's clothes are dirty. (he / clean / his car)

4. The children are hot and excited. (they / play football)

5. Tom's skin is red. (he / sunbathe / for hours)

6. Ann's hands are in ink. (she / write / letters)

7. Mary is slim. (she / keep to a diet)

8. My sweater is threadbare. (I / wear it / for a few years)

9. He is very good at tennis. (he / play it / for ten years)

10. He knows every street in this town. (he / live there / for many years)

Exercise 8. Paraphrase the following sentences using the words in brackets and con-junctions ‘for’ and ‘since’.

Example: a) They are working here. (Monday)

They have been working here since Monday.

b) He is waiting for us. (half an hour)

He has been waiting for us for half an hour.

1. She is writing a test. (twelve o'clock)

2. Tom is watching TV. (two hours)

3. They are sitting on the bench and reading. (morning)

Exercise 9. Complete the sentences using the pattern in Exercise 8. Use the Present Perfect Progressive Tense.

1. He looks really exhausted.

2. Their hands are stained with oil.

5. She is washing her hands nervously.

6. The tourists are angry.

7. The children are laughing heartily.

8. The audience is excited.

9. He's got a toothache.

10. The batteries have run out too quickly.

Exercise 10. Ask questions beginning with how long.

Example: I'm waiting for you.

How long have you been waiting for me?

1. They are discussing their summer plans.

2. Ann is translating an English article.

3. We are writing an essay.

4. The boys are skating on the pond.

5. Mr. Brown is travelling in the North.

6. It is raining.

7. My relatives are staying with us.

Exercise 11. Ask a few questions beginning them with how long + Present Perfect Continuous Tense or Present Perfect Tense. Use the following verbal combinations.

Exercise 12. Ask questions to the following sentences beginning with the words in brackets.

Example: He has been smoking a lot recently. (Why?)

Why has he been smoking a lot recently?

2. She has been packing her suitcase since morning. (What? Why?)

3. Arthur has been driving for six hours without any rest. (Who? How?)
