The State of Food Industry in Ukraine

Food industry in Ukraine is well developed. Ukraine became an independent state and in the result of it the industry was transferred from planned-centralized into market-controlled. Geographical factors determined the development of Ukrainian lands. 1) Ukraine is located in the zone of fertile chernozem soils, and 2) remarkably convenient geographical location on the crossroads of international trade routes. These soils give a rich harvest of these agricultural plants: grains- wheat, barley, maize; vegetables – sugar beets, potatoes, cabbages, carrots, onions and fruits.

The export-import structure between Ukraine and Russia, and other countries turned Ukraine into European “granary”.

All the regions of Ukraine are specialized in agriculture. Food industry is developed in Forest-Steppe zone (sugar), the Steppe (vegetable oils), the South (fruit canning, wine).

Ukraine provides 93% of products for its home market. The most of the enterprises are in private ownership.

What is the state of different branches of food industry?

The most developed branch of food industry is confectionery. It is the most dynamic and productive among the other directions of food industry. Highly-effective technologies are widely provided. They give the opportunity to work with acceleration, to produce the products which are highly demanded not only in Ukraine but behind the boundaries of the state ,too. Big confectionaries work here “Svitoch”, “Karl Marx” factory, ”Roshen”, “ABK” and others. They produce candies, cakes, pastries.

Sugar industry is well developed. Overproduction of sugar lead to the closing of the great number of small sugar plants and uniting them into big powerful economically profitable enterprises. They will work on a new technological facilities and use the newest energy saving technologies.

In baking industry we also observe the production of bread on the powerful big plants. For example, the baker’s plant was closed in Smila. And now the bread is brought from Vatutino for the whole region. It is more profitable in this way.

Milk processed industry produces many products for export: hard cheeses, sour cream, milk.
