TEXT 5
I. Choose the suitable title for the text.
а) Marketing research c) Prototyping
b) Testing design ideas d) Methods of market research
Designers and manufactures often test ideas before they commit to full-scale production by producing a prototype design. This could be a full size replica or a concept model of the final item for consumers to touch and handle and get the ‘feel’ of. This process of ‘realization’ of the design helps designers and manufacturers discuss the product with potential consumers and so raise the overall quality of the product. In so doing, designers can assess the likely reaction of consumers and potential end users for the future and determine how well their idea will meet expectations. This is an important part of market research and can be used as part of a questionnaire.
Surveys and questionnaires are used by designers and market researchers to canvas a response from people in order to find out what products are likely to sell successfully. Questionnaires can also be used to find out what fashions are popular and how people feel about things. Overall they produce various data about society and indicate trends that may be useful to designers.
The design and implementation of a survey can greatly affect the results obtained by those carrying out the research. Research methods are a branch of science in itself but there are some basic rules that apply to most data collections:
When writing a survey, remember you are trying to extract information about the likes and dislikes of your end user.
You need to use the information to help you with your design.
Do not be disheartened if you do not get the answer you were expecting.
The questions should be easy to understand and answer.
Do not expect your client to take ages answering your questions.
Provide tick boxed and areas for answers.
Ensure the questions flow in a relevant order.
You should ensure that your questions look neat on the page and have no spelling mistakes.
The method of focus groups was developed in the late 60’s and yearly 70’s. Here people were asked about what unconscious motivations caused them to buy certain products at certain times. Focus groups are still used today and along with questionnaires form the basis of all market research which allows designers to greaten the chance of producing products that will sell more successfully in the future.
