Objective and tasks of the course
The main goal of the course is to acquaint students with the subject-matter, specificity, and main historical events. The course dwells on the history of Ukraine. The themes accentuate the problems of the interconnection between a person, history and culture.
After studying the course students should
know:
- specificity of the historical science and its subject;
- logic, structure and function of history in the society and in the life of a personality;
- stages of development of history and culture of Ukraine;
- general tendencies of Ukrainian history.
be able to:
- correctly use terms and categories of history of Ukraine;
- interpret “historical context” from his/her own world outlook position and value orientations;
- apply his/her own knowledge in theory and practice.

1. The Slavs. The Russes. The origin of the name “Ukraine”. The creation of Kievan Rus.
2.The “Chronicle of Bygone Years” about the commencement of Kievan Rus. Kiev and Kiev’s land as The Core of Kievan Rus.
3. The dynasty revolution in 882. The Rurik dynasty. The reforms of Princess Olga. Sviatoslav.
4. Kievan Rus at its zenith. The reforms of Volodymyr the Great.
5. The “Ruska Pravda”( Rus Justice) The Basic Legal Code of Kievan Rus. The “Word about the law and grace” by Ilarion as the ideological apotheosis of the power of Kievan Rus. The “Word about the Ihor’s regiment” and the idea of the strength of Kievan Rus.
