KYIV

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine. It is situated on the banks of the Dnieper river, the longest river of Ukraine. Its population equals about 3 million people.

Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its history goes back to the 5-th century.

Since that time Kyiv has played an important role in all Slavic social, economic and cultural relations. Besides, it is connected with the reign of Vladimir, which was a glorious time in the history of Eastern Slavs.

Nowadays Kyiv is a large research and cultural centre. It is also one of the biggest

industrial and commercial centres of Ukraine.

Kyiv is famous for its historical places. Among them are the Golden Gate,

the Cathedral of St. Sophia, the St. Vladimir Cathedral, the St. Andrew Church,

Askold’s Grave, the Lavra Cave monastery and many other ancient monuments.

There are a lot of museums in Kyiv: the Historical Museum, the Museum of Ukraini-

an Art, the Museum of Western and Oriental Art, the Taras Shevchenko Museum and

others.

Kyiv is also famous for its theatres such as the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama

Theatre, Opera House, the Lesya U krainka Russian Drama Theatre, Puppet Theatre etc.

The Kyiv Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theatre has one of the best opera and ballet

companies in the world.
