UNIVERSAL SENTENCES
Erich Remarque once (to introduce) to an American girl who (to travel) in Germany. She (to delight) to meet him because she (to read) all his books which (to translate) into English. Then she (to ask) why Remarque never (to visit) the U.S. His answer (to be), “English (to speak) in the U.S. but unfortunately I (not to speak) it. In fact I (to know) only four sentences”. The girl (to ask). “What they (to be)?” the writer (to say), “Hello! I love you. Forgive me. Ham and eggs, please”. – “Why”, (to cry) the girl, “with these sentences a long tour can (to take) from Maine to California”.

An energetic American tourist (to come) to visit the Windsor Castle in England. At the entrance a lot of colourful guide-books (to display) the guide (to advise) the American to buy on of them. The American (to buy) a guide-book on the Windsor Castle and (to open) it at once. Then the guide (to ask) a lot of questions. “That famous vase (to bring) from Egypt? The table (to make) of oak from the Sherwood forest? How much money (to pay) for this table? The portrait really (to paint) by Van Dyke? The portrait still (to keep) in the castle?” all the questions (to answer), “Yes, sir”. Then the guide (to ask), “You (not to came) in and see all those things?” The American (to answer), “No, I won’t. The pictures of all those things (to print) in my guide-book. I (cannot) waste time. I (can) go on visiting other castles and museums”.

The American bought a guide-book on the Windsor Castle and opened it at once. Then the guide was asked a lot of questions. “Was that famous vase brought from Egypt? Is the table made of oak from the Sherwood forest? How much money was paid for this table? Was the portrait really painted by Van Dyke? Is the portrait still kept in the castle?” all the questions were answered, “Yes, sir”. Then the guide asked, “Won’t you come in and see all those things?” The American answered, “No, I won’t. The pictures of all those things are printed in my guide-book. I cannot waste time. I can go on visiting other castles and museums”.
