Task 2.

Read and translate the text.

A

This is Galkin. He is an engineer of the Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations. The engineers of the ministry often go to different countries to do business with foreign companies. Now Galkin is in London. He works at the Russian Trade delegation.

Galkin is usually very busy. He has got much work to do every day. His office hours begin at 8.30. In the morning he looks through Russian and English newspapers and journals. He is interested in the latest political and business events.

During the day Galkin meets English businessmen and discusses with them prices for different goods, terms of payment, shipment and delivery. Sometimes he discusses business matters on the phone. Together with Russian inspectors he often goes to plants in and outside London.

Now you see Galkin in his office at the Russian Trade Delegation in Highgate. It’s 2 o’clock in the afternoon. He is looking through the mail. He usually receives much mail, but today he has got few letters and telexes on his desk. He is reading a letter. It is an enquiry for chemical equipment from his company. Galkin knows “Blake and Cº” are selling a new model of this equipment.

Task 3.

Act out the dialogue with your partner.

Now Galkin is making an appointment on the phone with Mr. Green, the manager of the company.

Secretary: Blake and Cº. Good morning!

Galkin: Good morning! This is Galkin of the Russian Trade Delegation. I’d like to speak to Mr. Green.

Secretary: Just a moment, please.

Green: Green speaking.

Galkin: Good morning, Mr. Green. I’ve got an enquiry for chemical equipment from my company. We are interested in your new model. I’d like to have your latest catalogues and quotation. Could I meet you at our Trade Delegation on Monday.

Green: Oh, I’m very busy on Monday. How about Wednesday morning at ten o’clock?

Galkin: Good. See you on Wednesday. Good-bye!

Notes to the text:

  1. the Russian Trade Delegation – торговое представительство России (в Великобритании)

  2. Highgate [haigeit] – Хайгейт (район в Лондоне, где находится российское торговое представительство)

  3. Blake and Cº are selling – с названием фирм типа Blake & Cº, Brown & Sons глагол употребляется как в единственном, так и во множественном числе

  4. just a moment – одну минуту (разг.)

  5. Green speaking – говорит Блейк (фраза, употребляемая в разговоре по телефону)

  6. Could I meet you ... on Monday? – Не мог ли я встретиться с Вами … в понедельник?

  7. see you on Wednesday до среды; увидимся в среду

Task 4.

Agree or disagree (begin with “Yes, I think so”, or “No, I don’t think so”).

Give your reasons.
