5.5. During the Talks / Speech exercises

Task 1.

Say what you have learned from the text “Discussing the contract terms” about:

- Blake and C0.

- the new machines of Blake and C0

- the time of delivery, the terms of shipment and delivery.

- the price for the compressors and the terms of payment.

Task 2.

Think and answer.

1. Why were the compressors of Blake C0 selling very well?

2. Why couldn’t Voronin accept the price of Blake Co?

Task 3.

Read the dialogue.

It’s the 3rd of April, 10 o’clock in the morning. Mr. Camp, a representative of Roberts and Co. has come to “Machinoexport”. Now Bunin is meeting Mr. Camp in the conference room.

Camp:

Good morning, Mr. Bunin.

Bunin:

Good morning, Mr. Camp. Will you take a seat?

Camp:

Thank you. It’s very warm in Moscow now, isn’t it?

Bunin:

Yes, it has been very warm this month.

Camp:

How is your business Mr. Bunin?

Bunin:

Fine, thank you. We’ve just started selling boilers of a new model and we’ve received a lot of orders for them.

Camp:

Yes, we know that. We have studied your latest catalogues closely and we are interested in buying some boilers of this model.

Bunin:

Glad to hear that. The new model is certainly good. It’s of very high quality.

Camp:

Well, Mr. Bunin, I’d like to look through your contract form.

Bunin:

Here you are, Mr. Camp.

Camp:

Thank you very much. Let’s meet again next Friday and discuss the terms of the contract.

Bunin:

All right. Good-bye for now.

Camp:

Good-bye.

Task 4.

Say what you have learned from the dialogue about:

- the weather in Moscow.

- the new model of Machinoexport.

Task 5.

Think and answer.

- What does Mr. Camp think of the new model?

- What business matter would Mr. Camp like to discuss with Bunin next n Friday?

Task 6.

Read the dialogue “Making an Appointment”. Then role play it with your partner changing your roles.

Mr. Wilson is phoning the Russian Trade Delegation.

Wilson:

May I speak to Mr. Basov?

Secretary:

Who is that speaking, please?

Wilson:

I’m Wilson of Roberts and C0.

Secretary:

Mr. Wilson, Mr. Basov is on another line. Can you hold on?

Wilson:

Certainly.

Basov:

Basov speaking.

Wilson:

Hello, Mr. Basov. We’d like to give you an order for power equipment. I’d like to have an appointment with you to clarify

some details. Can we meet on Tuesday?

Basov:

I’m afraid, that’s impossible. I must go to London for three days and

I can see you only on Friday. Is 11 o’clock convenient to you?

Wilson:

Thank you. Good-bye for now.

Basov:

Good-bye, Mr.Wilson. See you on Friday.

1. Mr. Black, a British businessman, is interested in buying some compressors from Machinoexport. He has come to Moscow to discuss some business matters. Receive Mr. Black at your office. Speak about the quality of your compressors.

2. You are interested in the goods of Wilson and C0. You’ve studied their latest catalogues. Meet Mr. Wilson at his office. Speak about the weather in London. Say you would like to discuss the terms of the contract with him.
