7. Read and translate the text:
A peculiarity of the American mass communications system is that advertising pays most of the bills. It accounts for two-thirds of the revenue of the print media, and all the revenue for broadcasting. Only public radio and television, and occasional special interest programming such as religious shows, manage to get by without advertising support.
Persuasive advertising constitutes the bulk of the nation’s $100 billion annual advertising budget, in which newspapers get the biggest share (26,4%). Then comes television (21,9%), direct mail (16,8%), radio (6,8%) and magazines (5,2%). The remaining part of advertising expenditures (22,9%) goes for such things as billboards, business and farm publications, and other miscellaneous issues.
There are a half million people directly employed in the advertising business in America, and perhaps as many as a million more whose jobs depend directly upon advertising. To the first group belong those working directly as product manufacturers, in mass media advertising staff, outdoor and direct mail advertising firms, retail and wholesale outlets, and specialty companies. Among those whose livelihoods depend upon advertising are all the other employees of commercial mass media, plus printers, clerical and sales staffs, paper manufacturers, and sign painters.
