Developing speaking skills

Task 35. Having read the material of the unit, how would you answer the questions:

  • How would you describe the difference between efficiency and effectiveness? What real organisations are or are not efficient and effective, in your opinion?

  • In what ways can managers at each of three levels of management contribute to organisational efficiency and effectiveness?

  • Think about the organisation you are studying at. What are the first-line, middle and top managers’ roles in this organisation? What do they do to help the organisation be effective and efficient?

  • Think of your direct supervisor. What department is he or she a member of and at what level of management is this person?

  • If you could give your manager a piece of advice what would it be?

  • Which managerial skills do you possess at present? What would you do to improve them?

Task 36. Choose any of the dialogues offered below. Reproduce them with a partner. Change the roles. Single out the major ideas and be ready to report them to the group.

Dialogue 1.

A:

You know, I have recently met my former group-mate Andrew and it appears he is working as a chief operating officer in one of the largest publishing houses in Ukraine!

B:

Oh, really? I would never have thought of that! Both of you graduated from the university only four years ago. How did he manage to reach such a high position in such a short period of time? I remember him starting as an employee in a commercial department.

A:

Right you are. He started as an employee but was showing great interest and diligence in work and by the end of his second year he was promoted twice. Moreover, being a middle manager he already was in charge of 16 people.

B:

In this case he must possess and make an efficient use of all the technical, conceptual and human skills needed for a work of a good manager.

Dialogue 2.

A:

I am sure that a manager should have profound knowledge of economics and management. These conceptual skills contribute to his developing of the technical skills in the working place. And finally, he should communicate effectively with people, demonstrating the ability to mould them into a cohesive team.

B:

I think a manager should also possess unique business acumen.

A:

I agree with you.

Task 37. Work with a partner and complete the following dialogues. Act them out.

Dialogue 1.

A:

I have just begun studying management so I have several questions to you. What types of managers do you know?

B:

……………………………………………..………………………………........

A:

What is the difference in a job of a first-line manager and that of a middle manager?

B:

……………………………………………………………………………..........

A:

What is the major part of the middle manager’s job?

B:

…………………………………………………………………………………...

A:

How important is the work of the CEO to the company?

B:

……………………………………………………………………………..........

A:

What are other classifications of managers?

B:

…………………………………………………………………………...............

A:

Thanks a lot, you’ve been very helpful.

Dialogue 2.

A:

I have applied for the position of a manager recently and I have been told that I don’t possess enough human skills. What do they include?

B:

………………………..……………………………………..……………........

A:

Are there any other skills essential to manager’s work?

B:

………………………………………….............................................................

A:

But what should I do to acquire conceptual and technical skills?

B:

………………………………………………………………………….…..........

A:

Should all the managers in a managerial hierarchy possess the same level of skills?

B:

……………………………………………………………………......................

A:

Now I see that the lack of even one managerial skill can lead to failure.

B:

……………………………….............................................................................

A:

Thank you for your help. See you at the university.
