TEXT
Economics is a social science studying economy. Like the natural sciences and other social sciences, economics attempts to find laws or principles. Economics tries to find laws or principles by building models. The predications of the models form the basis of economic theories. Then the predications of the models are compared with the fact of the real world.
Economics as a science consists of two disciplines: microeconomics and macroeconomics.
Microeconomics is the branch of economics that studies individual producers, consumers or markets.
Microeconomics also studies how government activities such as regulations and dates affect individual markets. Besides microeconomics tries to understand what factors affect prices, wages and earnings.
Macroeconomics is the branch of economics that studies the economy as a whole.
It tries to understand the picture of a whole rather than small part of it. In particular, it studies the overall values of output, of unemployment and of inflation.
The word «the economy» is the word we hear or read almost everyday. For example, we may be told that «the world economy is in the doldrums», or «the European economy is making little progress out of recession» or «the UK economy is beginning to recover» or «the Scottish economy has held up relatively well during the recent recession».
But what is meant by the economy? What is the economy? How does the economy work?
The economy is a social mechanism which answers these questions. The economy means a system for the management use and control of money, goods and other resources of a country, community or household.
Exercise 1. Dialogue
Teacher: By the way, how many lectures on economics do you have each week?
Student: This term we shall have three lectures a week on economics and related subjects.
Teacher: Very good. I hope then you will easily understand all the texts we shall study.
Student: Shall we speak only on economics at our lessons?
Teacher : Oh, no. We shall also have lessons on every day English.
Student: It is a very good thing. My English is not very good. May I ask you another question?
Teacher: Yes, certainly.
Student: What kind of texts shall we study?
Teacher: Mostly they are extracts from various original sources. In many cases they are adapted. We shall discuss the newspaper reports on the business news. Some texts were borrowed from the Financial Times, The Times and Economist.
