І. Актуальність теми: Вивчення теми «Nursing» займає одне з важливих місць серед інших тем навчальної програми. Вивчаючи цю тему, студенти поширюють свої знання про хвороби та догляд за хворими, вдосконалюють свої знання з термінології.

3.2. Зміст теми:

The most infectious diseases can transmit from one person to the other. Residents of nursing homes present a higher risk for becoming ill from contagious diseases because congregate living places people in close proximity to one another, their immune systems can become compromised and many suffer from chronic, debilitating diseases. Residents often have little reserve to fight off the most prevalent, contagious diseases found in nursing homes, according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

Influenza

Seasonal influenza typically strikes nursing homes between the months of October and March. Residents are offered and encouraged to take the seasonal influenza vaccines to prevent or lessen the usual affects of the flu and also to prevent complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Once influenza has become established, it usually spreads rapidly by inhalation of droplets that become expelled in the air through coughing and sneezing. Influenza can also transmit through nursing homes on hands and environmental surfaces contaminated with the organisms.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis occurs because of both bacterial and viral organisms.The disease leads to inflammation of the stomach and intestines, resulting in abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Gastroenteritis may result from bacterial food contamination with salmonella, shigella and campylobacter bacteria. However, in nursing homes, the most common form of gastroenteritis results from the Noro Viruses, which appear in winter and early spring. The Noro Viruses prove extremely contagious and spread rapidly from person to person when the virus contaminates hands and environmental, high touch surfaces. There is usually a sudden onset of symptoms affecting many patients, healthcare workers and visitors but the virus dissipates within 24 to 72 hours, according to the CDC. Staff needs to observe elderly patients and residents for serious complications such as dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhea.
