It's also one of the sunniest winter parts in Germany.

Winter sports in the Black Forest have a long tradition.

Skiing was developed around the Feldberg. The first skiers were seen in eighteen ninety one and the first ski - lift was built here in the Black Forest. Skiing is very much part of the culture here in the region.

The Black Forest like most mid - range mount areas in Germany is ideal for cross-country skiing.

There are many trails for every level.

But you'll need lots of stamina for the one hundred kilometer long trail between Schonach and Belchen.

No winter trip to Germany would be complete without a stop in Bavaria.

At over two thousand meters both the Nebelhorn and the Fellhorn feature

world-class ski slopes and lifts.

All told the Allgäu is Germany's biggest winter sports region.

Hikers will also find a niche here.

The shady valleys create rock faces covered in stable ice for climbers with the proper equipment.

Of course the highest ski area in the country is in the Alps directly under the peak of the Zugspitze.

At two thousand nine hundred sixty two meters it's Germany’s only ski slopes

that lets visitors ski on a glacier.

The Zugspitze plateau offer ski and snowboard fans a challenging right over twenty two kilometers of some of Europe's best runs.

Up here the winter ski season is especially long with winter sports lasting well into April.

  1. A winter sport is a sport which is played on snow or ice. Traditionally such sports were only played in cold areas during winter, but artificial snow and ice allow more flexibility.

  • Most such sports are variations of skiing, ice skating and sledding.

  • Common individual sports include cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, speed skating, figure skating, luge, skeleton, bobsleigh and snowmobiling.

  • Common team sports include ice hockey, curling and bandy.

  • Winter sports often have their own multi-sport tournaments, such as the Winter Olympic Games.

3. The term 'Winter sports' refers to sport that take place on snow and ice. Keen competition has grown up around them, and the Winter Olympics are held every four years.

  • There are two main types of skiing:

  • Alpine Skiing, which features downhill and slalom racing.

  • Nordic Skiing, which is a cross-country sport that also includes ski jumping.

  • A new type of skiing, freestyle, is about performance rather than speed. In sled racing, riders hurtle down a special runs.

  • Skating includes figure, ice hockey, and racing.
