8. Read and translate text I. Make the plan of the text (part a) using key-words and write the abstract (part b). Text I. Resuscitation of the newborn

  1. The concern of medicine is life - helping to create it, preserving it whenever possible, easing its pains, making its ending as painless as possible. The first concern is birth, and since the beginning of history, lawmakers have placed it at the top of their agender because no society can survive without healthy generation.

Nowadays of seriously ill newborn babies has significantly improved by advances in medical technology. Infants who would have died had they been born in the 1950s or early 1960s can nowoften survive for long periods with the help of the sophisticated, though costly, medical treatment available in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) found in some 600 hospitals across the USA. As of 1989, these units had treated 200,000 newborn babies each year at an estimated annual cost of $ 1.5 billion.

As for Russia, neonatal intensive care units help to survive thousands of infants. The part played by the pediatrician in the marternity service has become very important, as it is clear now

America likes things big. Big cars. Big buildings. Big burgers. Americans also like getting a good deal. So very often retail outlets or restaurants offer large sizes of things for just a little more money than a medium size or a small size. For instance, if you go to a movie theater in the United States, you’ll find a small soft drink costs about $2, a medium $2.25, a large $2.50. A super-size or jumbo size—much bigger—costs $2.75.

So, the consumer thinks, “Well, it’s only a little more for the largest size.” The business thinks, “We’ve already made the sale, so why not try for a little more money.” The cost to them of that extra soda is negligible.

That, in a nutshell, is the super-size philosophy.

Vocabulary Notes:

get a good deal = find something at a good price, get value out of a purchase

retail = the sale of goods directly to the customer

soft drink = usually a carbonated drink like Cola, Sprite, etc.

consumer = the one who buys, the customer

negligible = very small or insignificant

soda = soft drink (sometimes called soda pop or just pop)

in a nutshell = summed up briefly

24. Read the text and answer the question: “What are advantages of whole plant food diet?” Whole Plant Food Diet

Heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes are commonly called “Western” diseases because theses maladies were once rarely seen in developing countries. One study in China found some regions had essentially no cancer or heart disease, while in other areas they reflected “up to a 100-fold increase” coincident with diets that were found to be entirely plant-based to heavily animal-based, respectively. In contrast, diseases of affluence like cancer and heart disease are common throughout the United States. Adjusted for age and exercise, large regional clusters of people in China rarely suffer from these ‘western” diseases possibly because thei diets are rich in vegetables, and whole grains.

The United Healthcare/Pacificare nutrition guideline recommends a whole plant food diet, and recommends using protein only as a condiment with meals. A National Geographic cover article from November, 2005, entitled The Secrets of Living Longer, also recommends a whole plant food diet. The article is a lifestyle survey of three populations, Sardinians, Okinawans, and Adventists, who generally display longevity and “suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life. “In sums, they offer three sets of “best practices” to emulate. The rest is up to you. In common with all three groups is to “Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains”.

The National Geographic article noted that an NIH funded study of 34,000 Seventh-day Adventists between 1976 and 1988 found that the Adventists’ habit of consuming beans, soy milk, tomatoes, and other fruits lowered their risk of developing certain cancers. It also suggested that eating whole grain bread, drinking five glasses of water a day, and, most surprisingly, consuming four servings of nuts a week reduced their risk of heart disease”.
