Albums in brief
MEXICAN PETS
‘The Voice Of Trucker Youth’
Following in the footsteps of Joyrider, Dublin quartet Mexican Pets are the latest discoveries on Andy Cairn’s Blunt label. The best thing about their debut albums is the inventiveness of the guitar work, which ranges from feedback drones through melodic clanging to choppy, slamming neo-punk. While the vocals are occasionally tentative, the songwriting is solid and assured., with former single ‘How To Have More Fun’ being the pick of the bun. Confident first steps.
IGGY POP
‘Best Of ... Live’
With two songs on the ‘Trainspotting’ soundtrack and a recent appearance with the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop is enjoying another revival at the moment. Few live albums capture the thrill of a great band in full flight, but this one succeeds purely because of the strength of classic sleazoid anthems like ‘Search And Destroy’ and ‘The Passenger’. Over-elaborate guitars dilute the vicious essence of some tunes, but Iggy’s snotty attitude will keep you entertained throughout the 18 tracks here.
PRODUCT OF SOCIETY
‘Schizophrenagenic’
Let’s talk about formuliac rap/metal, something that was never supposed to exist in the first place. Let’s talk about verses with someone rapping, while guitars stab in and out. Let’s talk about choruses with catchy football terrace chants, just like Dog Eat Dog. Let’s talk about a competent enough band displaying precious little imagination. Let’s talk about Product Of Society. They’ve been going since 1991, and have supported every New York band under the sun. Learned all the moves, too.
Task 7. Using the information above try to write a short (10 – 15 sentences) review of a concert.
