O. Henry is the author of many short stories. His stories are very popular all over the world. This is what happened to him one day.

He had an acquaintance whose name was Tripp. He was a young man but he looked forty. He often asked the writer for a dollar and spent it on whisky.

Once Tripp met a young girl whose name was Ada. She stopped Tripp and asked him where she could find George Brown. She told that she was going to marry a farmer, named Dodd. But before that she wanted to see George Brown. That's why she had come to New York. She had no money and didn't know where to look for George Brown.

Tripp could not leave the girl alone. He told everything to O.Henry and asked the writer to buy a ticket for Ada to get back home. He said that it would cost the writer three dollars and asked for another dollar for himself.

Ada told them all the details of her love story. She and George fell in love when they were children. When George was 19, he left the village to look for his fortune in New York. Before his departure he cut a coin in two halves and gave one of them to Ada. He promised to come back, but she never saw him again.

The two men were very sorry for Ada and advised her to go home. They saw her to the station and then went home. When they were going to the bus-stop, Tripp took his watch out of his pocket and the writer saw half of the coin cut in two. George Brown and Tripp were one and the same man.

Two of my friends lived in a small town near Liverpool. Their names were Stevenson and Black. They lost their jobs and were happy to agree to any new job

Stevenson was a very talented engineer and Black was a very good clerk.

One day Stevenson read in a newspaper that a chemical plant wanted an engineer and decided to go to Liverpool himself instead of sending the documents by air mail

"I think", Stevenson said, "Many people want to get this job and many of them will send letters. If I get to the plant before the manager receives the letter, I think I shall get the job".

Stevenson was right. He received the job.

I told my friend Black Stevenson's story.

A few days later I met Black. He was going to Mexico. A bank there wanted a clerk. He sent his documents by air mail, but decided to go there himself. He remembered Stevenson’s story

His letter had come to the bank 3 days earlier. When he came to the Bank the assistant-manager said he would speak to the manager about it and he left the office.

"Yes", the manager said, "I have received a letter from a man who lives near Liverpool. His name is Black. I have sent him a telegram to come here, and we will keep the job for him for 10 days. Tell that man outside “no”.

Black had not heard the conversation between the manager and his assistant. He had to go back home. But as he had spent all his money, it took him 2 months to get back to England. There he found the telegram which was waiting for him.
