Listen to a short story about Mark Twain and answer the questions below.

1 Where was Mark Twain going?

2 How could Mark Twain behave himself if he was sleeping?

3 Did the guard wake Mark Twain? Why?

Script

Mark Twain, the well-known American writer, was going to Manchester by train. He was very tired and wanted to go to bed. So he asked the guard to tell him when they came to Manchester. "If I am sleeping when you come to me, I'll be angry," he said. "But I must be in Manchester in the morning. So even if I am angry, please throw me out of the train." The guard agreed, and Mark Twain went to bed.

When he opened his eyes, it was morning. People were walking in the corridor. Mark Twain got up, put on his clothes and went out into the corridor. The guard was talking to a man at the end of the corridor, and Mark Twain went up to him.

"Haven't we come to Manchester yet?" he asked.

"We passed Manchester two hours ago," the guard answered,

"What!" Mark Twain shouted!"' "Why didn't you tell me? I asked you—don't you remember?"

The guard was surprised. "Are you the American who asked me to tell him when we come to Manchester?" he asked.

"Yes, of course," Mark Twain said.

"Then, who was the other man?" the guard continued. "Oh, now I understand why he was shouting and fighting as I threw him out of the train in Manchester!"

Listen to a short story about Conan Doyle and answer the questions below.

1 Where did Conan Doyle order the driver of the taxi to take him to?

2 Has the driver seen Conan Doyle before?

3 How did the driver know who his passenger was?

Script

Conan Doyle once arrived in Paris, after spending a month in the south of France. There was a long row of cabs outside the gate of the railway station. Conan Doyle got into the first taxi and ordered the driver to take him to a good hotel. The driver was silent on the way to the hotel, but when Conan Doyle paid him, he said, "Thank you, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."

"How do you know who I am?" Conan Doyle asked in the greatest surprise.

"I have never seen you before," the man answered, "so I can't pretend that I recognized you. But I have always been proud of my memory. Besides, I have always been able to notice small things. I read in the newspapers that you were expected in Paris after your vacation in the south of France. The train you arrived on came from the south of France. I could tell from your clothes, especially your hat, and also from the strange way you pronounce French words that you were English. These facts helped me to guess that you were probably Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."

"Fine work! Wonderful!" Conan Doyle cried. "You analysed the facts quite correctly. It's a pity you aren't a detective!"

"Of course," the driver added, "your name is on both your travelling bags. I can't pretend that that fact didn't help."

Some stories about dogs show that they are clever. There is a very clever dog in this story.

Mr. Dick and Mr. Bell were old friends. Mr. Dick liked dogs, and his dog Jack was always with him when he went for a walk in the park. But there were no dogs in Mr. Bell's house. He didn't like dogs.

Every day at five o'clock in the afternoon Mr. Dick went for a walk in the park, and he took Jack with him. Jack was always happy in the park, because there were other dogs there, and he could run and play with them.

Some days ago Mr. Bell came to Mr. Dick's house. The friends talked about the cinema and the theatre, and then they began to talk about animals. Mr. Dick said, "Dogs understand everything, and some of them can speak too."

"Dogs speak?" Mr. Bell smiled, and then he began to tell Mr. Dick a long story about his grandmother and grandfather. He talked and talked and talked.

At five o'clock Jack ran into the room and sat down in front of Mr. Dick. His eyes said, "Why doesn't your friend go home? I want to go to the park. Let's go now!"

Mr. Dick looked at Jack, then at his guest and then at Jack again. His face said, "But Mr. Bell is my guest, Jack! I can't tell him to go home."

Jack ran out of the room, but he came back quickly and sat down in front of Mr. Bell. The two men began to laugh. There was a hat in Jack's mouth, and it was Mr. Bell's hat.
