Section 5 the algorithm of conflict resolution

Taking into consideration all written above, the following algorithm can be worked out. It consists of 17 steps. The proposed sequence of actions can be specified depending on the peculiarities of the situation.

  • Step 1. Present an overall picture of the conflict and define its essence from the analysis of the information that you currently have. Evaluate positions and hidden interests of both sides.

  • Step 2. Speak to one of the opponents, whose position at the moment seems more justified. Learn about his/her point of view on the causes of the conflict, what s/he wants and what fears. Find out his/her opinion on the basic interests and concerns of the second opponent.

  • Step 3. By all means talk to a second opponent.

  • Step 4. Talk about the causes and nature of the conflict with the friends of the first opponent. They will provide more objective information about the interests and concerns of his friend. Further, they can also help in resolving the conflict.

  • Step 5. Talk about the causes, nature and way of settlement with the friends of the second opponent.

  • Step 6. Discuss the causes, ways of settlement, and perspectives with the informal leaders of the group.

  • Step 7. If it is necessary, discuss the issue with the heads of the both opponents.

  • Step 8. Understand the root cause of the conflict and imagine that there are not these particular participants involving in the conflict, but abstract people.

For the head (if there is any). Analyse the situation and develop concrete operations. It can be a reconciliation of the sides, putting forward recommendations which are obligatory for both sides or just solving issues providing success in opponents’ interaction.

  • Step 9. Determine the subconscious motives hidden behind the outer reasons. Accurately understand the ulterior content of the conflict.

  • Step 10. Determine in what each of the opponents is right and what is wrong. Support what they are right in, and point out weaknesses in each position.

  • Step 11. Evaluate the best, the worst and the most likely variants of moving events. Determine whether the parties themselves have come to a compromise.

  • Step 12. Assess possible hidden, delayed and future consequences of your intervention into the conflict not to become an enemy of one of the opponents.

  • Step 13. Think over and develop the maximum-program. Prepare to the opponents 3-4 option proposals of joint actions which can help to implement the program.

  • Step 14. Think over and develop the minimum-program. Prepare to the opponents 3-4 option proposals of joint actions which can help to implement the program.

  • Step 15. Discuss the problems with friends, informal leaders and heads (if necessary). Correct the plans according to their recommendations.

  • Step 16. Try to resolve the conflict, not only adjusting tactics, strategy and action based on the specific situation. Involve friends, informal leaders, if necessary - heads. Better to resolve the conflict with their help.

  • Step 17. Summarize the positive and negative lessons learned out of the result of interference in the conflict.
