What does an average day of labоratory assistants look like

As a medical laboratory technician, your daily routine depends on what department you work in. Craig O’Brien, a medical lab technician at a Toronto hospital, focuses on blood testing. “I usually start at 6:30 a.m., pack a cart full of supplies, and then venture to the in-patient wings of the hospital. There, I print a list of labels for blood that needs to be drawn that morning and start going room to room to draw blood from every patient that needs it,” he says. At his hospital, he’s part of a team of medical laboratory technicians that collects samples from each floor and sends them to the lab. Later in the day, they monitor floors, collect samples for new blood work orders, or help in outpatient labs.

Most medical laboratory technicians employed by hospitals, like O’Brien, are the links between labs and patients. Others work strictly inside the labs, receiving and preparing samples for testing. “They often field calls from other healthcare workers about sample conditions, and prepare samples that need to be tested by outside labs for transportation,” says O’Brien.

Others work in clinics or outpatient labs, where they do more administrative work (reading requisitions and registering tests) in addition to taking blood and getting it to a lab.
