VII. A. Read the text Wales and then discuss it (from Easy English № 43)
Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It has a population of three million, and a total area of 20,779 km². Wales, lying in the western part of Great Britain, is a highland country of hard old rocks. Much of Wales' diverse landscape is mountainous, particularly in the north and central regions. The highest mountains in Wales are in Snowdonia, which contains Snowdon its highest peak.
Wales is a country of green forests and medieval villages. Wales is mainly rural, but there are several large cities such as Swansea and Cardiff. Such industries as coal-mining, steel production, electronics, electrical engineering are developed in Wales. Wales lies within the north temperate zone, its changeable, maritime climate making it one of the wettest countries in Europe. Two-thirds of Wales' population live in south Wales, mainly in and around the cities of Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, and in the nearby valleys.
Today Welsh is taught either as a first or second language in every school in Wales. Modern Welsh literature has been written in both languages. The Welsh are fond of folk music, singing and poetry. The Welsh are very proud of their rich tradition and keep it alive in songs and dances.
Welsh is the mother tongue of a large number of people, but only about 20% of Welsh speak both Welsh and English. Wales is officially bilingual, the Welsh and English languages having equal status. Although football has traditionally been the more popular sport in north Wales, rugby union is seen as a symbol of Welsh identity.
Cardiff, Wales' capital is an industrial city and a port, the country's most populous city, with 317,500 residents, and for a period was the biggest coal port in the world. Today, with the country's traditional heavy industries (coal, steel, copper, tinplate and slate) either gone or in decline, Wales' economy depends on the public sector, light and service industries, and tourism.
