II. Read the text to find out the functions of accounting and bookkeeping.

Returning to our definition of accounting, we note four major functions: recording, classifying, summarizing, and interpreting. Bookkeeping deals primarily with the first two of these. Books are normally set up and maintained in a manner that will assure the orderly classification and recording of business transactions. Accounting includes the art of bookkeeping, but goes far beyond it. Since bookkeeping has become greatly mechanized in recent years, there has been some decrease in the demand for the routine bookkeeper. To the accountant, however, mechanization comes as a welcome relief. It has freed him to a large degree from the routine, time-consuming recording function, permitting him to devote more time to the important area of interpretation. It is this last function, interpreting the results of financial activities, that best distinguishes accounting from bookkeeping. Extensive training in accounting, as well as considerable knowledge of other areas of business including management, marketing, economics, and finance, are essential to this phase of accounting. As business enterprises become increasingly complex and move to the routine of machines, the gap between accounting and bookkeeping widens. Bookkeepers are constantly being replaced by machines, whereas the demand for professional accountants continues to soar.
