As originally proposed by nineteenth-century German economist Karl Marks, communism is a system in which all the economic resources of a country are collectively owned. Marks envisioned a society in which, ultimately, people would contribute according to their ability and receive economic benefits according to their needs. He expected government ownership of the factors of production to be only temporary – just until society had matured.

With centralized state planning, communist nations have expanded their overall production rapidly. But people often have little choice as to the type of work they will do and where they will do it. Also, government emphasis on capital equipment and military hardware has caused severe shortages of consumer goods.
