7.2.2. The procedure of the diagnostics

7.2.2.1.The procedure of the diagnostics using the method of self-appraisal.

7.2.2.1.1. Suggest the examinee to estimate the investigated characteristics with the help of a universal diagnostic scale according to the method described in 7.1.2.1.1. – 7.1.2.1.2.

7.2.2.1.2. Carry out the reading of the indication and put down the result in column 7, table 20.

7.2.2.2. The procedure of the diagnostics of self-appraisal adequacy.

7.2.2.2.1. Make the diagnostics of self-appraisal having suggested the examinee to estimate the characteristics which are important for him. The procedure of the diagnostics is made according to item 7.2.2.1.

7.2.2.2.2. Make the diagnostics of the same characteristics using the method of expert estimation according to items 1.2. – 1.4. of the previous paragraph.

7.2.2.2.3. Alongside with expert estimations the Following estimations can be used as objective ones: the results of academic progress, achievements in work, sports, art, etc. You are going to use them, you should have the copies of necessary documents.

7.2.3 Working up of the results

7.2.3.1. Calculate the coefficient of self-appraisal adequacy (CSA) according to the formula:

SA – Eav.

CSA = ----------------- x 100% (25),

SA + Eav.

where: CSA – coefficient of self-appraisal adequacy;

SA – self-appraisal;

Eav. – average expert estimation.

7.2.3.2. If there is any other objective estimation, it is used instead of Eav. while calculating CSA.

7.2.4. The interpretation of the results

When interpreting the results of the diagnostics of self-appraisal adequacy, you should take into account the quantity and the sign of CSA (the coefficient of self-appraisal adequacy).

7.2.4.1. The quantity of CSA is interpreted with help of the diagnostic scale of self-appraisal adequacy submitted in item 2.6. of appendix 2.

7.2.4.2. The sign of CSA characterizes the orientation of self-appraisal. If CSA has “ + ” sign, the self-appraisal is overestimated, in case it has “ – ” sign – self-appraisal underestimated.

Let’s look through the peculiarities of people with overestimated self-appraisal and those with underestimated – self-appraisal.

People with overestimated self-appraisal are characterized by aggressiveness, conflictness, anti-social behavior. It is caused by their aim to avoid the psychological discomfort which is connected with underestimating of self-appraisal. Any remark concerning such person may cause non-adequate anger, aggressiveness, insulting behavior.

People with overestimated self-appraisal are not inclined to be engaged with self-perfection, improving their professional skills and raising their educational level, as they consider themselves perfect and educated enough.

In its extreme forms, overestimated self appraisal may lead to such psychic diseases as schizophrenia and paranoia.

7.2.4.2.2. People with underestimated self-appraisal are distinguished by excessive shyness, lack of self-confidence, timidity. These characteristics result in the difficulties of intercourse, especially while establishing new socio-psychological contacts. As a result, there are some problems in the professional activity, particularly those concerning the system “person – person” (leader, teacher, actor, doctor, etc.)

Their inability to refuse something to anybody, causes extra difficulties in their life and work. That’s why they often make others’ job unpaid, even to their detriment.

Being afraid of solving big problems, they use their own potential insufficiently, that’s why they low results of their activity and social status. Because of this such people often suffer the inferiority complex. In its extreme forms underestimated self-appraisal may lead to such mental disorder as psychasthenia.

7.2.4.3.Adequate self-appraisal contributes to a full realization of a person’s abilities and characteristics, ensures the adequacy of his behaviour and his relationship with people.
