1. Job Description
Operations: Freight Anti-smuggling Officer. Protects society by combating the importation of dangerous or illegal goods such as firearms, drugs and obscene items. Customs officers are involved in preventive work - targeting and searching vehicles, freight and documentation. There can also be some agency work for the police (licensing vehicles, drink driving etc), and for the immigration authorities.
Administration: Support Services Adviser. Provides, steers, amends and updates policy and guidance to meet departmental needs. Informs the public and colleagues throughout Customs of changes in legislation. Deals with queries in a range of HR areas, for example poor performance, appraisals, recruitment and issues concerning nationality.
2. Typical Work Activities
Operations: Freight Anti-smuggling Officer. Typical activities include:
selecting and targeting individual vehicles based on risk, intelligence, previous offences, previous shipping information, computer records and current trends;
searching individuals, vehicles and cargo for smuggled goods;
examining documentation relating to imported freight;
physically examining freight to check that goods carried tally with documented description;
running background checks and then questioning the driver of the targeted vehicle, questioning what you hear and what you see;
listening carefully and remembering what is said, it may later be needed for statements/evidential purposes;
arresting individuals suspected of smuggling, confiscating smuggled goods;
working closely and effectively in a team, trusting and relying upon your co-workers in potentially dangerous situations;
managing more junior members of staff, directing their activities.
Administration: Support Services Adviser. Typical activities include:
providing guidance and policy to meet departmental needs;
reviewing areas of guidance, re-writing and improving them to incorporate new views and legislation;
responding to a variety of queries on a daily basis, often to do with poor performance or matters of probation or legislation;
giving presentations to do with policy and changes in legislation and guidance;
liaising with people across the business to collect views on how policy and guidance could be improved or amended;
working in a complementary way with customers and colleagues in different teams and in areas all over the country.
