IX. Read and translate the text orally. Translate paragraph 4 in writing

The Company Secretary arrives earlier than usual to ask whether the Agenda for the Board of Directors' Meeting later in the day has been typed yet. And the office junior brings in the morning mail which he has opened and sorted, and which needs to be distributed to the various managers. There is a great variety of tasks undertaken in the office and the staff engaged in these operations need to know a great deal about the business.

The personnel function in an organization has many facets. There will have to be contact with line and departmental managers to ascertain staffing requirements. Applicants for jobs will need to be interviewed and recommendations made for appointments. Procedures will need to be developed for upgradings and promotions as well as selection. After staff have been appointed induction programmes will need to be organized so that the new re­cruits can fit in as efficient members of the team as soon as possible.

Any businesses need to advertise. If they did not advertise no-one would even learn of the exis­tence of their wares. In part, advertising is aimed at conveying information to potential customers and clients, but it is also used to persuade the public to buy. This re­quires a basic understanding of psychology, the needs of human beings and how those needs can be satisfied.

The transport revolution in Britain was not limited to trains. Iron ships powered by steam were infinitely more efficient than the wooden sailing ships. No longer was it necessary to wait for favourable winds to carry cargoes to their destinations. No longer were there those long dry waits in the doldrums with sailors whistling for the wind. The new vessels could carry greater cargoes, longer distances with more predictable timing. They were even safer since they were not required to flirt with the wind.
