IX. Read and translate the text orally. Translate paragraph 4 in writing

Everyone involved in a business operation has to refer to the office from time to time. In the first few minutes of the day the office comes alive. The salesperson telephones from a customer's shop to find out some details about prices, or discounts, or delivery dates. A customer telephones to find what has happened to the order he sent in last week. The short-listed applicants for the new Quality Control Manager's job turn up for their interviews with the Personnel Manager.

The Personnel Department is concerned with the provision and maintenance of a work­force. There are two dimensions to the task. The first is to ensure that employees are available in the right numbers, at the right time and with the necessary skills for the jobs that need to be done. This is the dimension of quantity. The second dimension relates to the quality of the workforce and is evidenced by the workers' enthusiasm and motivation. Highly motivated workers will be more productive.

The objective of any firm is to market and sell its products or services profitably. In small firms, the owner or chief executive officer might assume all advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations responsibilities. In large firms, which may offer numerous products and services nationally or even worldwide, an executive vice president directs overall advertising, promotions, marketing, sales, and public relations policies.

The world of business needs a transport system if it is to function effectively. On the one hand, raw materials have to be brought to the factories for processing. Very often those materials need to be imported from other countries. There are so many different materials called for that few countries are able to cater for the needs of their industries. Some countries are rich in one commodity. Other countries are rich in other commodities. The resources of all the countries in the world can be made available to all so long as there are the necessary means of transport.
