27. Pupil language (what pupils might be expected to use during an English lesson):

  • I’m sorry, I didn’t understand. You are speaking top quickly. Could you say it again? Could you repeat the last bit? I missed the beginning of what you said.

  • I don’t understand what I’m supposed to do. Could you repeat the instructions, please? I’m sorry, I didn’t get that down. Shall we do the exercise in our workbooks?

  • Is it my turn to retell the text? Am I next? Shall I start reading? Shall I proceed reading? Which number are we on/up to?

28. Not hearing /understanding (suggested answers):

  • Sorry? What did you say?

  • Sorry?

  • What?

  • Pardon?

  • What was that?

  • Speak up!

  • Missed that. What did you say?

  • Sorry, I can’t hear you.

  • I didn’t quite hear/catch what you said.

  • The rest of you, keep/be quiet.

  • I can’t hear what he’s saying with all this noise.

  • I beg your pardon. I thought, you said.
