SCIENCE OPENS ROADS TO FUTURE

The Soviet Union has created advanced science which leads the world in many fields. The successful launching of Soviet space rockets to the far regions of the solar system and the flights of cosmonauts in satellite spaceships are obvious evidence of this.

The Soviet people have achieved great success in power generation and nationwide electrification, ffl future the development of power production will depend oh the construction of thermal and hydraulic power stations. However, the role of new energy sources, such as nuclear power and new methods of conversion of thermal, chemical and nuclear energy into electrical power, are to grow in the future, and this calls for extensive research.

Technical progress is now impossible without high-quality materials. Success in this field depends on the achievements of physics and chemistry. Research in the creation of new synthetic materials is conducted on a wide front. A great economic advantage is already obtained from the uses of polymer and plastic materials in a number of structural elements and different components. An important achievement of our scientists is the development of methods for the production of silicon-organic polymers of special structure. They are required fop the development of electrical engineering, radio and electronics, rocketry, etc. At present new glasses with homogeneous microcrystalline structure, called sitals, have been developed on the basis of ordinary glass.

It is hard to over-estimate the role of radio electronics in technical progress and In the life of modern society in general. In our time achievements in this branch are associated with the utilization of crystals, amohg them semiconductor crystals. More attention is given to the study of thin film properties.1 The use of film microelements promises a new and even greater progress in radio electronics, computer engineering and automation.

Soviet scientists successfully continue research in quantum electronics. This research is of primary importance for the development of communication engineering as well as wireless energy transmission, thermonuclear investigations and new technology in general.

Cybernetics is gaining a growing importance. Nowadays, many processes of man's activities can be mathematically described and, therefore, technical facilities may be provided to simulate 2 these processes automatically. Automation makes it possible not only to free man from doing various operations but also to perform the operations with a greater speed and accuracy. The progress of computing engineering and the theory of programming process are vital to successful employment of cybernetic techniques.

Soviet scientists are making a worthy contribution to the national effort to promote further the progress of Soviet economy and culture as a means of realizing the Programme of building communist society.
