Когда два или несколько предложений соединяются посредством интонации и специальных служебных слов (союзов или союзных слов) в одно законченное выражение, то речь идет о сложном предложении. Если два или несколько простых предложений соединяются в одно сложное предложение как равноценно будет сочинение (Coordination), и такое сложное предложение называется сложно-сочинённым (Соmpound Sentence). Если два или несколько предложений соединяются вместе и одно из них является главным, а другие определяют его и являются придаточными, то это будет подчинение (Subordination), и такое сложное предложение является я сложно-подчинённым (Complex Sentence).
Сложно-сочинённое предложение (Compound Sentence):
EXAMPLE: I wrote a letter, and he took it to the post office.
Сложно-подчинённое предложение (Complex Sentence):
EXAMPLE: When the letter was written, he took it to the post office.
