What sort of environmental problems can give rise to threat for the well-being of the world population?
We shouldn’t forget that industrial pollution is only part of a vast problem of the environmental hazards. Of great consequence is the polluted environment of areas where millions suffer the efforts of ignorance, poverty, lack of sanitary conditions, poor food and disease.
Which of the agent of pollutants in those areas are the most dangerous for man?
First of all I must mention human excreta.
What harm can they effect on human health?
Excreta are responsible for hookworm and many other parasites dangerous to life. Besides I want to mention the resurgence of an old and forgotten in the developed countries diseases – cholera, which is transmitted from man to man by a polluted environment, polluted by human waste and unprotected water supply.
So the most pressing problem is ignorance and lack of sanitary condition…
Solid waste disposal in general is a serious problem. Refuse of all kinds help flies, mosquitoes, rodents and other disease agents to thrive, passing on illness to man.
How many people are the victims of disease in developing countries?
Millions fall victims to a wide variety of communicable diseases in places where the biological pollution from community waste is allowed to reach drinking water source and food.
What kind of work is being carried on at present?
The general problem of pollution is being vigorously attacked. Sanitation and sanitary education is being carried on among the population at large.

Erosion is the modern symptom of maladjustment between human society and its environment. Men are permitted to dominate Nature on precisely the same conditions as trees and plants, namely on condition that they improve the soil and leave it a little better for their posterity than they found it. Agriculture in Europe, whatever its other weaknesses, has been, and perhaps still is, a practice tending on the whole to increase its fertility. The illusion that fertility can always be restored by applying some of the huge amounts of artificial fertilizers now available has been shattered by the recognition that fertility is not merely a matter of plant-food supply, but it is also closely connected with soil stability. An exhausted soil is an unstable soil. Nature has no further use for it and removes it bodily. Whereas under normal conditions a fraction of an inch of soil may become exhausted and be removed in a century, under human control the entire depth of soil may become exhausted and be eroded in a few years.
