Yerevan

  1. Yerevan is the capital city of the Republic of Armenia, an ancient and ever young city. The official establishment of the great city of Yerevan took place in 782 BC. Thus the establishment of the City-Fortress of Erebuni predates that of the Eternal City of Rome by more than two decades.

  2. Yerevan is situated in the beautiful and scenic Araratian Valley, on the banks of the Hrazdan River. It is one of the oldest settlements in the world. Archaeologists unearthed many tools from the Stone Age.

  3. It is no wonder that they call Armenia The Land of Stones and Mountains. The Armenian farmers really earned their daily bread directly "out of stone". That is why the Araratian Kingdom was proud of massive network of water canals for the irrigation of fields and vineyards. Parts of these canals can operate now!

  4. In the eleventh century and later, nomadic Seljuk Turks and later Mongol invaders flew into Armenia. These tribes caused much harm to the ancient peoples of Anatolia and Armenian Highland. Large migrations took place of populations of Armenia to faraway lands in Europe and beyond. Many people fled to countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and scattered all over Europe. Yerevan suffered, too, and many people left the city in fear of their lives. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Turks conquered Yerevan. Catholicos and the rich and powerful Armenian nobles and tradesmen made secret plans for liberation of their city in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. They used the help of Christian powers of Europe, particularly of Russia.

  5. The Russian Imperial army as well as a large contingent of Armenian militia liberated Yerevan in 1828. Soon after, Yerevan became an administrative centre of the Yerevan Province of the vast Russian Empire. Roads and railroads had a positive effect on the growth of the city as a total entity, but Yerevan still remained a small city. In the early part of the 20th century, Yerevan's population numbered roughly around 30,000 people. But large number of peasant workers came into Yerevan later.

  6. In 1918, Yerevan became the capital of the First Independent Republic of Armenia. The Turkish treat and unfolding events in Russia were the main concern of the government. Soon, those fears became true. But the XIth Red Army entered Armenia on November 29, 1920 and, by December 2, occupied most of Eastern Armenia, including Yerevan. Since then, the Second, Soviet Republic lasted for nearly 70 years with its ups and downs.

  7. Yerevan grew quickly, tall buildings and wide streets and avenues replaced the shacks and narrow streets of old Yerevan. Universities, Institutes, the Academy of Sciences, the Depository and Research Institute of Ancient Illuminated Manuscripts, theatres, museums, TV and radio stations all sprang up throughout the decades of 1950's, 60's and 70's.

  8. Today Yerevan is a thriving industrial centre which quickly turns into a capitalistic industrial city with lots of commercial banks, stock exchange and privatized large companies, firms and corporations. Yerevan became the centre and the capital of all Armenians worldwide. Yerevan is the heart of the Armenian Nation.
