Palmtop

A small computer that literally fits in your palm. Compared to full-size computers, palmtops are severely limited, but they are practical for certain functions such as phone books and calendars. Palmtops that use a pen rather than a keyboard for input are often called hand-held computers or PDAs. Because of their small size, most palmtop computers do not include disk drives. However, many contain PCMCIA slots in which you can insert disk drives, modems, memory, and other devices. Palmtops are also called PDAs, hand-held computers and pocket computers.

Computers can be generally classified by size and power as follows, though there is considerable overlap:

  • Personal computer: A small, single-user computer based on a microprocessor.

  • Workstation: A powerful, single-user computer. A workstation is like a personal computer, but it has a more powerful microprocessor and, in general, a higher-quality monitor.

  • Minicomputer: A multi-user computer capable of supporting up to hundreds of users simultaneously.

  • Mainframe: A powerful multi-user computer capable of supporting many hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.

  • Supercomputer: An extremely fast computer that can perform hundreds of millions of instructions per second.

From Desktop to Palmtop: Creating Usable Online Documents for Wireless and Handheld Devices   (Citations: 5)

George F. Hayhoe

Over the last 10 years, we've learned to plan online documents carefully, write succinctly, design for delivery on the screen rather than the page, and use images and other media with restraint and skill. Now the large installed base of Palm and Pocket PC information appliances and the growing number of Web-enabled wireless devices impose even greater restrictions on those who design help and Web content. This paper examines the problems and opportunities for technical communicators who must deal with very small screens, low resolution, and user environments that require us to rewrite the rules for online document design and delivery. During the last decade as significant numbers of technical communicators have been working in electronic as well as print media, most of us have internalized the mantra of online documents: The screen is not a printed page. As a result, we have realized that we must plan online documents carefully and differently than print documents, write succinctly, chunk information, and use images and other media with restraint and skill (Horton, 1994). The first generation of electronic documents—primarily delivered as online help and Web pages—reflects the growing maturity of a profession that has come to terms with these precepts. Recently, however, new challenges have emerged as a second generation of electronic documents is being designed and published. The millions of handheld devices using the Palm and Pocket PC operating systems as well as the Web-enabled wireless devices now coming to market impose even greater restrictions on those who design help and Web content. This paper examines the problems and opportunities that confront technical communicators who must deal with much smaller screens with much lower resolution, different operating systems and hardware/software protocols, and new user environments that require us to rewrite the rules for online document design and delivery.

ANSWER: The difference is that Desktop's are much much bigger and take up alot of space. Because you have a monitor (comp screen) and the computer. The newest computer have much much more GB (GigaByte) space than Laptops do. However Desktop's aren't portable. Laptops are lighter and are portable. Desktop's have to be connected to an outlet to make it have power. Laptop's don't need to be like was much as Desktop's. Since they have a built in battery to operate and do need to be chareged or to work or recharged and have reserved power later to work on. Laptop's have the mouse, keyboard, and screen in one device while desktop's are all separate. Differences Between Desktops and Laptop's DESKTOP - Need a wall jack to put all of the cords in - Need a Keyboard (obviouly) - Need a cord or wiresless mouse (obviously) - Need Speakers (obviously if u plan to watch movies) - Have MORE GB than Laptop's since the computer is way larger - Have MORE cords connected to the computer - Uses more electricity for your electricity bill to be enormous - NOT freely to move around your huge mansion, apartment, house, retirement home LAPTOP - DON'T need a latop since it already comes with one connected - DON'T need a monitor (connected to the laptop) - DON'T need a mouse you already get a built in mouse on the bottom part of the laptop - Able to move freely around your manshion, apartment, house, retirement home .e.t.c - Don't need to deal with all the cords that Computer (WINDOWS) have - Have built in speakers - Fewer GB Prices
