City presentation for the visitors
8.4 Read the texts below, translate them, study the active vocabulary and compose the presentation of your native city. Welcome to Winnipeg
On behalf of my colleagues on City Council, and all citizens of our great city, I would like to welcome you to Winnipeg!
We are proud of our reputation as a safe and hospitable city, with a tremendous variety of cultural and recreational attractions.
Our quality of life gives all Winnipeggers a sense of pride. As home to the worlds’s largest multicultural festival, Folkorama, we celebrate the cultural diversity that exists in Winnipeg. We applaud our unique heritage at Western Canada’s largest winter festival, Festival du Voyageur. We are home to North America’s largest collection of mature elm trees, more golf courses per capita than anywhere else in North America and, according to Canada’s National Newspaper, we are Canada’s performing arts capital, with world-class ballet, symphony, an opera company, live theatre, as well as cutting edge Fringe Festival performances and funky bistros. In Winnipeg, there is something to meet everyone’s taste, with restaurants featuring global cuisine from more than forty countries.
As Winnipeg’s Mayor, I am confident you will find Winnipeg a perfect place to work and play, and I hope to welcome you back very soon!
Glen Murray,
Mayor.
Positively Minnesota
Minnesota has found itself basking in the national spotlight lately. But the reality is that Minnesota has been in the spotlight for years, thanks to our strong diverse economy, high quality of life, and educated workforce.
My administration is focusing on keeping our state competitive, and making sure more businesses want to call Minnesota home.
Minnesota constantly ranks at or near to the top each year in categories ranging from business climate to quality of life. Our competitiveness is evident in many areas:
Shrewd management skills have resulted in Minnesota consistently being ranked by Financial World Magazine as one of the best-managed states.
Minnesota provides a healthy lifestyle and place to live. According to Reliastar Financial Corporation’s State Health Rankings, Minnesota is the nation’s healthiest state.
The Corporation for Enterprise Development, which issues an annual ‘report card’ on state economics, gives Minnesota its highest grade for economic performance and development capacity.
According to Morgan Quinto study, Minnesota has ranked first nationally as the most livable state for three consecutive years.
In addition to being nationally recognized as a leader, Minnesota worked to lower state-imposed costs for businesses, including reducing workers’ compensation taxes, eliminating the sales tax on all capital equipment used in manufacturing, and decreasing business property taxes.
As business costs continue to fall, Minnesota has maintained the highest standards for its schools, transportation systems, and social and environmental services.
As you strive to stay ahead of the competition, you need a site for your business that will give you an edge. We are confident Minnesota is the place.
Governor Jesse Ventura
