Exercise 1. Make up several questions of different types (including indirect questions) based on the following sentences: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12.

Exercise 2. Make up several sentences on the analogy of sentences 2, 5, 10, 11, 14.

30. Money

Introductory material

Read and translate the following sentences paying special attention to the words in bold type.

1. Yet money was important to him, its presence was a deep source of security, and it was somehow a stuff through which he was vitally connected with the world. 2. Their money’s good, isn’t it? 3. If money was scarce, there was always plenty to eat, and clothes enough for all. 4. When she told him about the money, to her surprise, he said: «Oh gosh, I don’t want it.» «I didn’t think you’d accept it,» she said. 5. That’s not much money, but it’s everything I earned. 6. I paid a lot of money. 7. She had learned to discuss money without embarrassment and not to lower the rent to everyone who made her feel sorry for them. 8. EXPLANATORY NOTES

Money n. Metal (gold, silver, copper, or alloys) stamped into coins or printed notes with values stamped on them, given and accepted when buying and selling.

The noun money (деньги) is not used with the indefinite article; nor is it used in the plural form.

However, the plural form moneys (monies) exists as a special term used in the sphere of finance and law (монетная система валюты; денежные суммы).

Exercise 3. Paraphrase the following phrases using the word under discusssion.

Exercise 4 * Insert articles whenever required.

Exercise 6. Use the following sentences in situations.

If you do lose your money you’ll at any rate have had the satisfaction of doing what you wanted to do. 5. His mother had left him a little money, just enough to buy a house. 6. Exercise 7. Make up a list of adjectives and verbs that go with the noun money; use several of the resulting phrases in short dialogues or situations based on the subject matter of English or American novels.

Exercise 8. Translate the following sentences into English.
