Revision Exercises

Exercise 1. Make up several questions of different types (including indirect questions) based on the following sentences: 4, 7, 11.

6. Cloth, cloths, clothes

Introductory material

Read and translate the following sentences paying special attention to the words in bold type.

1. «Why don’t you put on some of Julius’s clothes?» «That’s just the joke! He locked the bedroom door. And there isn’t a cloth in the whole of the rest of the flat, except this dish clout which I’ve twined about me.» Morgan twitched the cloth off her and cast it away. 2. His bags of samples and the long bolts of cloth were in the back of his small shooting brake. 3. Cradling it in a cloth like a mother taking her baby to its cot, he put the dish back in the oven until Daniel returned. 4. She took her brushes and cloths into the bedroom. 5. «Nellie,» said Aunt Florence, «fetch a cloth. Mr Geoffrey has made a mess «‘. 6. Some clothes were red, some were blue, some smart, some dowdy. 7. His clothes were wet with perspiration. 8. EXPLANATORY NOTES

Cloth n. 1. (sing.) Material made by weaving (wool, silk, cotton, linen, etc.) (ткань, тканый материал; сукно, полотно, шелковая, бумажная ткань, холст и т.д.); (pl.) cloths in the sense «kinds of cloth» (сорта сукон, материй). 2. (sing.) A piece of this material for special purposes (кусок материи, тряпка; скатерть), e.g. a floor ; a dish ~; (pi.) cloths in the sense «pieces of cloth”

Clothes n. pi. (the original pl. of cloth, now not identified with the sing.; not used with numerals) 1. Wearing apparel, dress, garments; articles usually of cloth, designed to cover or protect the body (одежда, платье). 2. Bed clothes (постельное белье).

Remember that the noun clothes always requires the use of a verb in the plural, e.g. His clothes were well cut.

It stands to reason that the indefinite article or the pronouns this, that are never used with this noun.

Exercise 1. Translate the following phrases and words into Russian; use them in sentences or situations.

1. Sunday clothes. 2. Plain clothes. 3. A plain-clothes man. 4. To buy clothes off the peg. 5. A clothes-basket. 6. To jump into one’s clothes. 7. A clothes-line. 8. A clothes-peg (a clothes.-pin). 9. In long clothes. 10. A cloth of gold (silver). 11. A table-cloth. 12. A book with a cloth binding. 13. To cut one’s coat according to one’s cloth.

Exercise 2. Answer the following questions.

1. Why do you like to buy ready-made clothes? 2. How long does it take you to put on your clothes in the morning? 3. Do you like black clothes? Why not? 4. What kind of clothes do young girls wear? 5. What do we mean by shabby clothes? 6. How many table-cloths have you got? 7. What do we use to dry the dishes? 8. Where do you keep your clothes? 9. What articles do bedclothes include? 10. What kind of cloth is your coat made of?

Exercise 3. Paraphrase the following phrases using one of the words under discussion.

1. To adapt expenditure to resources. 2. Wearing apparel. 3. A cover for a table. 4. Sheets and pillows. 5. A rope stretched between posts on which clothes are hung to be dried after being washed. 6. A peg (a pin) used for fastening clothes to a clothes-line. 7. Not in uniform.

Exercise 6. Use the following sentences in situations.

These (farm wagons) were full of the farming people in their Sunday finery, the girls in muslin frocks and garden hats, the men with linen dusters over their black clothes. 5. Every rib in the child’s body showed. It was like a cage over which a dark cloth has been flung at night to keep a bird asleep, and like a bird his breath moved under the cloth. 6. I’ve always spent too much money on my clothes.

Exercise 7. Make up a list of adjectives and verbs that go with (he forms cloth, cloths and clothes; use several of the resulting phrases in short dialogues or situations based on the subject matter of English or American novels.

Exercise 8. Translate the following sentences into English.
