Exercise 1. State the type of the composite sentence.
1. I realized that they had fallen in love. 2. If you are successful, people will forgive you practically everything. 3. Will you be still using the computer when I come back to the office after lunch?. 4. If you've got the means of getting something done, use it. 5. This afternoon Martha was late for the lecture because she had had a sleepless night. 6. It was an absolutely freezing day when we arrived in Moscow. 7. Although she was extremely surprised she did not show any sign of it. 8. As he had no alarm clock, he overslept. 9. The waiter served the food, which had been cooked by the best chef in Paris. 10. The police are looking for the woman, who had kidnapped the child. 11. They ran to the spot where they had hidden the money. 12. They were so poor that they couldn't make both ends meet. 13. Sophia behaves as if the world were at her feet. 14. He had come so close that he and Frank were almost nose to nose. 15. It seemed as if he had been wanting to say all this for years.
Exercise 2. State the type of the clause (subject, predicative, object) in the following complex sentences. Translate the sentences into Russian.
1. The doctor’s advice was that my brother should go to the south immediately. 2. That the matter should have taken such a turn is not surprising. 3. We have never discovered who did it. 4. You may rely upon what he says. 5. I think he is in the library. 6. I shall ask him whether he will arrange it for me. 7. He isn’t what he pretends to be. 8. I cannot understand why he did it. 9. I am not satisfied with what I have written. 10. The question is whether they will arrive in time to take part in this work.
Exercise 3 Translate into Russian paying special attention to the conjunctions and connective words and state the type of the clause.
1. It should be noted that the technical documentation of the hydroengineering project contained 199 volumes. 2.That it is possible to convert heat to energy and energy back to heat can be demonstrated in a number of ways. 3. Visitors always ask if the flood defence system will be put into operation in time.4. If a solid body or a liquid is heated, it will usually expand. 5.
