4.1 McLuhan is perhaps the only media theorist to have become a media celebrity. During the height of his fame he even played a cameo role in Woody Allen’s acclaimed film, Annie Hall (1977). Beginning with Innis’s ideas about the impact of the printing press on information monopolies, McLuhan’s medium theory states that any advanced modern society is shaped by the various media technologies that are available to it. Media have powerful effects on societies. Moreover, media become extensions of ourselves; extensions of our human senses. What matters, then, is not the content of these media technologies but the technologies themselves.
4.2. Canadian historian Harold Innis is famous for his studies of the interrelation between culture, media, and technology. Innis divided media into time-biased and space-biased media. The former include handwritten and oral media that are intended to last for many generations, but are used in relatively small communities. The latter include most of the modern electronic and print media, which are designed to reach as many people as possible, but will typically not last long in time. While time-biased media favor a sense of community, space-biased media favor commercialism and imperialism. Among his most important works are Empire and Communications and The Strategy of Culture.
