Reading Newspapers in the USA
1. If you read a lot of newspapers every day you must know how to find your way through newspapers, that is, how to find information you need very quickly. Newspaper people like doctors or baseball players have their own language. You must know some of these words before you start reading newspapers or talking about newspapers. Here are some of these words.
2. Masthead. The masthead of a newspaper shouts for attention. It announces the name of the newspaper, the city it is published in, the day of the week, the date, the volume number, the number of pages and its price. Many big newspapers publish more than one version of the paper each day. The boxes at each side of the paper's name eye called 'ears'. Often one of the boxes gives the weather, the other gives the slogan of the newspaper. The 'ears' are part of the masthead.
3. Headline. The main headline is always the biggest heading on the page. The first few sentences of the story are called the lead. The lead is usually a summing up of the story.
4. The major news story is a story which to editors is the most important at the time. In analysis the editors don't tell you a straight news story. Some known people such as writers or public figures give their opinion of the news in analysis.
On the front page you will also find an index, which lists all the features in alphabetical order and tells you what page each is on. If you want to find TV schedule you look under T in the index. The editors try to print the index in the sane section every day. Gut means any kind of illustration, such as a photo, drawing, graph, weather map. Outline or caption is a line that describes the cut (picture).
