Look at some online job boards. Find one that looks interesting. How can this site help you with work-related questions? What can you do on that site? Tell the class about the site and list at least five helpful things people can do on that site.
Fieldwork
In pairs, interview someone who may want to change careers. This person might be your classmate, your teacher, your neighbor, or a relative.
1. Ask this person questions about his or her career dreams. You should start with the following questions. If you want, add some questions of your own to the list.
What is your name?
What is your career now?
What do you do in your career?
What are the good and bad things about your career?
What kind of career do you want to have? Why?
Why would you like this dream career better than your career?
2. Interview the person.
3. After the interview, write a report. Describe the job that person has and the job that he or she wants. Explain why he or she dreams about a different kind of career. Use any ideas you learned from the readings to help you write.
4. Share your report with your classmates. Discuss the stories and information in the reports. What do people want from a career?
In small group, choose one of the following products: toothpaste, cars, laundry detergent, or cigarettes. Look through magazines for advertisements on your product. Bring as many ads as you can to your group. Together, study them. What kind of psychology is the advertiser using? (Fear? Desire for a good self-image? Self-fulfilling prophecy?|)
Do an internet search on one of the organizations in the chart and share it with the group.
