People learn languages every day. However, the reasons for doing so are varied. To learn a language is no longer something that can be done at school and forgotten in the workplace. The nature of the global economy is changing the way we approach language learning. To learn a language is … for a number of reasons and purposes:
1) Work or Career. Success in a career increasingly demands that people learn foreign languages. If your work involves … with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own language will help you build direct relationships with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. … of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion, a transfer overseas or of going on foreign business trips. Companies dealing with international markets are increasingly demanding better language skills of their workforce. In short, do not limit your career opportunities - learn a language.
2) Relocation or Emigration. When you move to a different country through work or personal choice, it is important that you learn the local language. This will help with the relocation process by allowing you to integrate with your new …. Even if many of the locals speak your language it is still advisable to learn the local language. This demonstrates your interest in and … to the new country.
3) Family and friends. If your partner, in-laws, relatives or friends speak a different language, learning that language will help you to communicate with them directly. It is also the most effective way you will learn about and … their culture.
4) Study or research. You may find that … about subjects you are interested in is published mainly in a foreign language. Learning that language will give you access to the material and enable you to communicate with colleagues and peers in the field.
5) Travel. Perhaps you are planning to go on holiday abroad. If so, knowledge of the language(s) you are likely to encounter will be useful. It is always a good idea to learn some … phrases to help you to 'get by', i.e. to order food and drink, find your way around, buy tickets, etc. If you have a more advanced knowledge of the language, you can have real conversations with the local people, which can be interesting and will add a new dimension to your holiday.
6) Studying abroad. If you plan to study at a foreign university, college or school, you will need a good knowledge of the local language, unless the course you want to study is taught through the medium of your own language. Your institution will probably provide … to improve your language skills and continuing support throughout your main course.
7) Culture. Maybe you are interested in the literature, poetry, films, TV programs, music or some other aspect of another culture? Learning the language gives you access to their culture by allowing you an insider's view.
Whatever the reason, learning a language opens up doors to many opportunities and benefits.
