This information will broaden your ideas on Peru, Lima and Camisea oil project and you will be able to understand better the problems discussed in the text “Gas for Peru v green imperialism”

Camisea Gas Project

100km from Machu Picchu the lives of uncontacted tribes are at threat. A huge gas project known as Camisea is located in the heart of their land. Now the Peruvian government is searching for more gas that will reach further into their territory.Today Camisea is run by a consortium of gas companies led by the Argentine firm Pluspetrol and including the US’s Hunt Oil and Spain’s Repsol. In April 2012 Peru’s Ministry of Energy approved more gas exploration inside block 88. This means more wells, more seismic testing, and more disturbances for the tribes.

In 2003, under pressure from the Inter-American Development Bank, a Supreme Decree was passed to increase the protection of the Nahua-Nanti Reserve.

Peru secured a loan of more than $75 million from the bank in order to develop the Camisea project after it agreed to a number of conditions. One of these was the promise that ‘no new rights can be granted for the use of natural resources’.

This means that any new work in the Nahua-Nanti reserve is illegal under both international and Peruvian law.

Exercise 5: Read and retell the letter written by someone to protect the tribes and the Camisea.

S.E. Humala****** Presidente de la República del Perú Palacio de Gobierno Plaza de Armas Lima 1 Peru

August 12, 2012

Dear President Humala

I am very concerned about plans to expand the Camisea gas project into land inhabited by uncontacted tribes.

Camisea has already been disastrous for the tribes in the area, and has led to the deaths of half of the Nahua Indians. If the gas fields are expanded, the remaining uncontacted Indians could face the same fate.

I am particularly concerned about reports that the government has plans to expand the gas fields into a new block known as Fitzcarrald.

As you know, any new oil or gas exploration in the area is illegal under national and international law and under Supreme Decree No. 028-2003 AG.

I urge you to ensure that the rights of these peoples are respected and that you protect their land from further exploratory work.

If the expansion goes ahead, some of the world’s last remaining uncontacted tribes could be wiped out.

Yours sincerely,

Exercise 6: Step 1. Translate this very letter from English into Russian. Put the translation down (look the form below) Step 2. Translate your Russian version one by one in chain (цепочкой) with no pauses. Is your translation the same as the original letter?
